Breast Pumps with Car Adaptors Work

by Wendy Wright, IBCLC
(Palo Alto, CA)

Visitor Breastfeeding and Working Tip: While working and breastfeeding my commute was about 35 minutes each way. I drove daily with my daughter in strapped safely in her car seat. We would listen to our favorite children's music on the CD player - we would also hear the sound of the breast pump from the front seat.

In the garage each morning I would strap on the hands free bra, turn on the breast pump and start driving. A zip up sweat shirt covered everything and provided easy access as well.

15 minutes into the commute there was a great place to pull over - I would switch out the bottles and turn the pump back on to fill another set. When we pulled into day care, I could deliver four bottles of very fresh milk and was set to work until around 11:30 or lunch time when I would pump again.

I also pumped around 3pm at work and then at the daycare I would breastfeed my daughter at pick up. I pumped while driving home - usually getting only two bottles but it was a bonus for trips out of town for work.

Many people thought I was crazy to pump in the car but it is private, clean, safe and a great use of time. My daughter was breastfed for 18 months when she self weaned. Give it a try - I think you'll be glad you did.
