Breastfeed My Newborn: Heather's Breastfeeding Story
Submitted by Heather (Seattle, WA USA)I knew while I was pregnant that I would want to breastfeed my newborn.
I read so much about the benefit of mother’s milk over formula. Breast fed babies are healthier over their lives, not to mention formula is very expensive! I still remember the first time I held my son and tried to nurse him. It seemed so hard. Neither he nor I knew what we were doing, and I couldn’t get him to “latch on” at first. But the nurses in the maternity ward were very patient and helped us get the hang of it. It was such a special moment for me, it's almost beyond words. It was a very special type of bonding with my son. At first my nipples got very sore and cracked. Then a friend told me about a special lotion made especially for nursing moms. I’d recommend that to everyone. It solved that problem. My only other challenge was after I went back to work. I wanted to continue breastfeeding, so I had to carry a breast pump. My employer was very supportive and they let me use an empty office to pump. I weaned my son when he got his first tooth with no difficulties.
