Breastfeeding after Breast Implants

Breastfeeding and Implants

Visitor Question:

I got breast implants after having my other kids. Now I am pregnant again. Will I be able to breastfeed?

Breastfeeding Magazine Response:

There are two major issues to consider regarding breast implants and breastfeeding: whether the breast will be able to produce enough breast milk and if nursing with implants is safe for your little one.

Newer implants are generally safe for your baby and, for the most part, women have found that they can breastfeed successfully breastfeed after implants without a problem.

Good luck!

no problem

I had breast implants five months before becoming pregnant with my third child. My implants are silicone, over the muscle, with an incision in the nipple. I was scared that I wouldn't be able to breastfeed, but I had no problems at all! I produced just as much milk as I had with my twins (which was an overabundance!), and I had no difficulties whatsoever. My surgeon had been very careful to protect my milk ducts when performing the surgery. If you are careful to do this, you should have no problems breastfeeding. My son just turned one year old, and we are still going strong!
