Breastfeeding and Mace Spray

Visitor Question: I am currently breastfeeding. Can mace or OC spray affect my baby? I am required to get sprayed myself due to my work and will need a doctors note to get out of it, I would just like some additional information on this.

I assume it would pass on to my baby if I inhale it, since what passes through mother, passes through baby?

Breastfeeding Magazine Response: While it may be harmless for some, our doctor would advise against it.

Due to the harsh effects of mace spray, anyone with a chronic illness or a compromised immune system should seek immediate medical attention after exposure.

Pregnant and nursing mothers should also seek help due to the unknown affects that this could have on the health of both mother and baby.

If you, by any chance, also suffer from asthma or other respiratory problems, the effects of mace spray can sometimes even be fatal.

We would ask your doctor to give you a note just to be safe.
