Our Breastfeeding Journey

Anna L. shares her breastfeeding journey. Here is her breastfeeding story in her own words:

I am the mother of two kids. My daughter is 25 months and my son is now six months. I am still breastfeeding both.

It was very rocky with the first. I did not think I was going to do it after a week or two of trying and recovering from a c-section (including an incision infection that caused me to spend an extra four days in the hospital.) I did though with the support of my husband, mom and LLL.

After the initial experience it became a rewarding experience. I returned to work when my daughter was 12 weeks old but I continued to use a hand pump and she had breast milk exclusively until about six months. At about 9 months I stopped pumping and she would drink her milk when I got home from work.

I was fortunate to breastfeed painless during my pregnancy with only a little drop in supply the last trimester. I had a scheduled c-section this time which went awesome (I even left the hospital early) and my son latched on immediately. I did not have any problems. He latched on and now they both enjoy their milk. Sometimes even together. (this is the only time my son has the upper hand on his sister by pulling her hair with his chubby fingers.)

Some days I want to wean my daughter but other days I enjoy this experience. I continue to work full time and perhaps I know this is one thing only I can offer to my children. So I will probably complain some days but continue to breastfeed until they wean themselves. This has worked well for our family.

I am thankful my body has been able to allow me to do this and that I have a loving husband that supports this.

Good luck to all those out there starting their breastfeeding journey. It is treat, difficult, so many emotions but so many rewards.
