Breastfeeding on Public TV

Here is breastfeeding on PUBLIC TV!

We sometimes get tired of the public breastfeeding taboo and this makes us long for the days when we didn’t worry about being “politically correct.”

right

We found this great breastfeeding video clip from a 1977 episode of Sesame Street. Can you imagine if they tried to air this now?

Breastfeeding video clips like this are precious. It is a shame that our kids can’t see them on TV today.

Buffy is simply explaining to Big Bird that breastfeeding is natural and wonderful and that although not all mothers do it, many of them do. What a positive and educational message for kids without coming off as judgmental or pushy.

Change in Television Policy:

What is most interesting about this–is the way TV has changed since 1977 when this aired. While TV keeps pushing the envelope more and more with sex and violence, innocent things like this are not allowed to air because they might “offend someone.” Why on earth would someone NOT be offended by the latest Victoria Secret commercial but be absolutely appalled at a woman lovingly feeding her baby?

Changing Perceptions

The only way to reverse this trend is to be open and honest about the benefits of breastfeeding and teach our children that it truly is the most natural and loving way to feed a baby if you can.
Maybe then, the next generation will see it as natural and acceptable as it is with Buffy and Cody several decades ago.

We would love to see more of this today. Isn’t it just precious!?
