Breastfeeding, Pregnancy and Weaning

by TANYA
(PINE GROVE, CA U.S.)

Visitor Question: I stopped breastfeeding my 21 month old son about 2 weeks ago. My breasts are tender sore and have clear fluid. I had a some what normal period on 12/22/08. I am feeling nauseated, fatigue, frequent urination, flu like symptoms.

Are symptoms associated with weaning or pregnancy?

Breastfeeding Magazine Response:

Unfortunately, these symptoms could be related to pregnancy, weaning (if you have developed an infection) or even the flu.

You may continue to have fluid from your breast for some time, but if they appear to be red or become painful, you may have developed mastitis and need to consult a physician.

You may simply have the flu!

Pregnancy is probably the LEAST likely scenario since you recently had a period.

Good luck.
