Caffeine Withdrawls after Stopping Breastfeeding?

Visitor Question: If my wife drank a lot of pop and the baby was fussy would she get withdrawals from caffeine if she just stopped breastfeeding? She seemed a lot fussier after she stopped breastfeeding and went to soy formula. I was just wondering if that could be it.

Breastfeeding Magazine Response: Very little of a mother's caffeine intake reaches your baby through breast milk. Even if your wife drank A LOT of pop, it is very unlikely that your child would get enough caffeine to really affect her or to later cause withdrawal symptoms.

Any type of formula is harder to digest than breast milk, so it is probably just tummy upset caused by the switch...not the caffeine.

Fussiness in babies usually get worse if they are weaned...not better.
