Can I Pump Breast Milk Before Birth?

Visitor Question:I am about a week to a few days away from having my second child. I have noticed that my milk has already come in. Is it okay and safe to start pumping now before I have the baby?

Breastfeeding Magazine Response: You really should wait to pump after the baby is born. Your body probably only has the colostrum the your baby needs in the first few days of life, anyway.

In addition, if you start pumping too soon before you go into labor it can cause harm because you can stimulate your hormones and put yourself into early labor.

We only recommend pumping before you deliver if you are past your due date and your doctor suggests this as an option to speed up the onset of your labor.

Good luck with baby #2!
