Medela Freestyle Breast Pump Review

Breast Pump Review Rating:

Medela Freestyle
The Medela Freestyle, Medela's newest model, will amaze many moms. If you are used to lugging a backpack-sized breast pump around, this small pump is a welcome change. It fits in the palm of your hand and weighs less than 1 pound!

What to Look for In a Breast Pump

There are breast pumps on the market that an expectant mother could get lost searching for the perfect companion to her new lifestyle. If you are planning to return to work or will be busy outside of the home after your baby is born, you should look for the following features in your new breast pump:
  • Hands Free Design
  • Portability
  • Lightweight
  • Effective Expression Technology
  • Adjustable Speed and Suction
  • Intuitive Display
  • Built-In Cooler
  • BPA/DEHP Free

Look, Mom! No Hands!

Children are often excited when they master new skills without using their hands. Now, mothers can be just as proud of themselves when they learn to pump hands-free. The Freestyle pump from Medela comes with a special kit that allows mothers to pump while doing other things with their hands. It doesn't even make a mess!

Express Yourself Anywhere

A good breast pump should be able to go wherever you go. If you need to return to work, your pump should go with you. If you want to enjoy a relaxing lunch with friends, you should be able to express milk in the restroom if needed. The Medela Freestyle comes with a rechargeable battery and a convenient tote to carry everything along with you. The tote is very discreet, so everyone doesn't have to know what you are up to as you head to a private spot.

Ultra Light-Weight -- Less Than One Pound

Medela Freestyle Pump

Double pumps can be a bit heavier than single pumps, but Medela made this one incredibly lightweight. The pump weighs just one pound and the accessories are lightweight as well. The heaviest thing in the tote will be the battery.

Suction like a Baby

Babies have a special way of drawing milk from their mother's breast. They first stimulate the breast so that the milk drops and more can be expressed. They then start a more aggressive sucking pattern that is designed to draw out the milk. After doing some research, Medela created a technology that allows their pumps to mimic this natural sucking pattern of babies. The pump first stimulates the breast to let down the milk, and then changes patterns to express the milk.

Find Your Perfect Setting

You can adjust the speed and intensity of suction on this machine. This ensures every mother finds a setting that is comfortable for her breasts.

Intuition Like a Mother

Intuitive breast pumps are the hottest things on the market today. A pump with an easy-to-read backlit digital display that recorded your pumping session would have been unimaginable ten years ago, but it is available now on this Medela breast pump. The digital display reports your pumping time and records the settings of your session. This makes it easy to push a button and go back to those settings on your next pumping session.

Chill Out for 12 Hours

Pumping away from home can be difficult if you don't have a discrete way to keep your expressed milk cool until you get back home. The Freestyle tote has a built-in cooler that holds four bottles, which come with your purchase of the product. It also has an ice pack, which ensures the milk stays cool for up to twelve hours. You no longer have to put your expressed milk in the company refrigerator!

Good Riddance to BPA

All parts of the pump that come in contact with your skin or your baby's milk are completely BPA free. This includes the four bottles that come with the pump.

How Much Should You Expect to Pay?

The Medela Freestyle sells for less than $400. You may be able to get it below $350 if you shop around online. Remember, shipping on this item is always free at Amazon!

What's Included?

  • Double breast pump
  • Tote
  • Removable cooler
  • Ice pack
  • 4 bottles with lids (5 oz)
  • 1 Wide base bottle nipple
  • 1 Bottle travel cap
  • 2 breast shields (24 mm)
  • 2 breast shields (27 mm)
  • Hands-free kit
  • Mobility accessories
  • Power cord
  • Charger
  • Rechargeable lithium-ion battery

Does It Include a Warranty?

The motor carries a limited one year warranty. Other parts are covered by a limited ninety day warranty.

What Others are Saying About the Medela Freestyle Breast Pump

The Medela Freestyle breast pump has received over 150 consumer reviews on Amazon.com. Those reviewers have given the pump an average of 4 stars out of 5.

Here are some comments that represent what consumers are saying about the pump:

  • "I would highly recommend this pump to all women who plan on returning to work and pumping at the same time."
  • "This is my first breast pump and I'm very satisfied with my decision."
  • "The pump is nice and light compared to other pumps in the market, but I had to replace it 3 times in one year."

Any Complaints?

There are many, many happy new mothers nursing away with the Medela Freestyle breast pump. Unfortunately, there are also some mothers who report a weak motor that doesn't live up to the standards expected from a Medela pump. The pump works perfectly fine for most users, but some units may die out within a few months of use.

The good news is that Medela honors the warranty on this product and is very fast to send replacement parts. These parts restore the unit to proper functioning, so pumping can continue. The risk is that no mother knows if they might get the defective unit that doesn't last very long and needs these replacement parts.

Otherwise, there are no complaints against the Medela Freestyle pump. Consumers love that it is so easy to use and gentle on the breast.

Where Can You Buy The Medela Freestyle Breast Pump?

While we have found the quite of few retailers carry Medela breast pumps, Amazon.com tends to have the lowest prices and free shipping on this model. Click here to check current prices at Amazon.com.

Avoid Cheap Electric Breast Pumps

electric breast pump

Looking for cheap electric breast pumps? Well...Stop!

When you decide to breastfeed your baby, you may decide to search for cheap electric breast pumps in order to find one that will let you get a break from your baby, but not cost you very much.

Don’t make this mistake!

We realize that there are so many breast pumps out there that it is easy to get overwhelmed and many women just look at price, but experienced mothers will tell you…all breast pumps are not created equal!

Therefore, it is important to figure out what is the best breast pump for you and your situation. For help finding the best breast pump for you, click here.

A good breast pump can have a big impact by helping nursing mothers continue to breastfeed longer than many of them otherwise would.

In fact, some nursing mothers actually consider their breast pumps to be as important as car seats, baby wipes, and diapers! It doesn’t matter whether you are going back to work or just need a breast pump occasionally to relieve engorgement, quality does matter.

It Makes a Difference. Here's Why.

Cute baby If your breast pump is cheap, it will not be as efficient as a better pump. In fact, while a good pump may be able to express 10 ounces in 10 minutes, a lesser pump may take 45 minutes to get only six ounces. (What new mother has time for that?)

Many cheap electric breast pumps also are not as effective. Some women cannot even get a letdown with a cheap pump so it doesn’t work for them at all.

We have provided an online breast pump review guide to help. Read other reviews too! Ask your friends for recommendations. Click here to read our breast pump reviews.

Just don’t waste your money on a cheap breast pump. You will be much happier with a good quality pump. It will keep you breastfeeding happily longer…which in the end, saves even more on formula and makes for a happy mommy and a happy baby.

Best Breast Pump to Buy

It is important to know what is the best breast pump for you and your situation when shopping for breast pumps.

While Breastfeeding is a wonderful commitment you make to your sweet children…it is also a round the clock commitment that lasts a long time.

Sometimes, just having good electric breast pumps can have a big impact by helping moms continue to breastfeed longer than many of them otherwise would!
Best Breast Pump

In fact, most of us experienced breastfeeding mommies consider our breast pumps as important as our car seats, baby wipes, and diapers!

It doesn’t matter whether you are going back to work or just need a breast pump occasionally to relieve engorgement and get a night out…

You’ll have lots of choices.

Some breast pumps are hand-operated, and others run on electricity. They are designed differently. Some models attach to only one breast while others let you efficiently express milk from both breasts at once.

Here are the steps you should take to decide the best breast pump for you to buy.

1. Determine how often you plan to use the pump.

If you think you will rarely need or use it, a simple hand pump may be all you need. These pumps are small and inexpensive. You simply squeeze the handle to express the milk. You may even choose to pump one breast while the baby nurses on the other breast. (Warning: these pumps are usually not very efficient and take a long time.)

If you plan on only feeding your baby breast milk, plan to go back to work or want the most effective and fastest way to express milk, you will want to invest in a good electric pump. Electric breast pumps stimulate the breasts much more effectively than hand pumps and are a great deal faster.

2. Realize how long it will take to pump each breast.

Electric breast pumps are so much faster than manual pumps (usually less than half the time.)

So if you’ll be returning to work and be hurried for time, you will definitely want to choose an electric model with the dual pumping option. They will cut pumping time down by at least half.

3. Determine if you need it to be portable and discreet.

If you will be taking your breast pump to work every day, look for a model that comes in an easy to carry bag or backpack. Some of the best breast pumps come in stylish bags with insulated sections for storing expressed milk until you return home.

4. Ask yourself: Does noise matter?

Some breast pumps are quieter than others. If it is important to be discreet, make sure the pump’s noise level is acceptable for your situation. Some moms have a dual-electric model for their normal use and a manual one for situations when they don’t want to make any noise.

5. If you purchase an electric pump…check its backup power options.

Many of the best breast pumps available need to be plugged in. However, if an outlet isn’t accessible, many have a battery pack or adapters that run on a car’s cigarette lighter!

6. Determine how much you are willing to spend.

When it comes to the best breast pump to buy, spending the extra money on a really good pump does make a huge difference.

Some friends have simply given up on pumping because it took too long or they got very little milk for their effort. The problem wasn’t that they “couldn’t pump…” which is what they thought. Instead, they had opted for a less expensive pump to save a few dollars, and it was basically worthless. Once they tried a good pump, they were hooked and never looked back! For more on breast pumps to avoid…

If you can afford the investment, whether you are a stay at home mom or a working women…buy the better pump. You will be so glad you did!

7. If you still aren’t sure what is the best breast pump to buy…

Ask friends for recommendations. Read reviews from visitors to our site. or

EvenFlo Breast Pump Review of the Evenflo Select Performance

If you are considering the Select Performance electric breast pump, this Evenflo breast pump may work for you as an occasional use breast pump–because all breastfeeding mothers need a reliable back up plan.

evenflo select performanceThis back up plan is a single pump designed to express smaller amounts of milk when need arises. This might be an evening out for dinner where you need to express for comfort or a moment of desperation where the baby isn’t latching and you need to express regardless. The Evenflo Select Performance single pump is designed just for these last minute or desperate situations.

Evenflo Select Performance Breast Pump Features:

What do you get when you bring home the Select Performance as your back up plan? Take a quick peak:

  • Adjustable vacuum intensity
  • Included tote bag
  • Built-in cooler compartment with ice packs
  • Battery or AC adaptor
  • Horn insert for greater comfort
  • Safe for the dishwasher
  • BPA free bottle and parts

This is the type of breast pump that you turn to in the middle of the night when you need to express but the baby is sleeping soundly. It is the pump that you can even use in the bathroom stall because there is no other option to relieve discomfort or avoid a leaky mess.

Yet, you do get a lot of the conveniences that now come with more durable, full sized electric breast pumps. You can adjust the intensity of the vacuum suction, which means you can mimic the pressure of your baby’s suction. This is important because it can help your milk drop easier if you are used to breastfeeding most of the time.

The BPA bottle and parts is also an important feature, since the materials are completely safe for your baby. When you are done pumping you can stick the parts in the dishwasher for a fast and convenient clean up.

What are Others Saying about the Evenflo Select Performance Pump?

Many consumers using the Evenflo Select Performance pump appreciate the convenience of having a reliable back up plan when breastfeeding isn’t possible. They recognize that it is not intended for regular or intensive use and they take comfort knowing the Select Performance is there for them in their hour of need.

Select Performance Pros:

  • Adjustable suction
  • Extremely portable
  • Discreet tote bag
  • Cooler compartment

Any Complaints?

Those that don’t enjoy this pump as much tend to be those who have higher expectations than they really should. You have to keep in mind that it is not going to be the most durable, stable, or consistent breast pump on the market. It is a step up from manual single pumps, but it is not a full sized, double breast pump with an intense motor for routine use. Keep this in mind when deciding to purchase this over other pumps on the market.

There are more than twenty consumer reviews on Amazon for this pump, and it receives an average of two and a half stars out of five. That is not very impressive. The machine seems to be held back by two potential problems:

1. The way the pump connects to the bottles is not very secure. There can be some accidental tip-over incidences if you are not very careful.

2. It is incredibly loud. There are many others on the market that are much quieter.

Other Potential Select Performance Disadvantages:

  • Non-adjustable speed
  • Extremely loud in operation
  • No hands-free operation
  • Easy to tip bottles over

Overall Rating

2.5 stars

This EvenFlo breast pump is a relatively inexpensive pump that may serve the needs of moms who just need it on a rare occasion. However, you may want to consider other pumps in this price range that may be more effective for you at around the same price.

Breast Pump Bra Options for Hands-Free Pumping

If you are a working mom, you know that the breast pump bra is one of the best inventions for nursing moms! If you have to be away from your baby for extended times or you can’t feed your baby at the breast…it is so helpful to have hands-free pumping options like these.

Many times women have given up breastfeeding because of the inconvenience of having to pump. These bras have enabled moms to hook up the breast pump and continue multi-tasking without a second thought!

It is also can help the process to be more efficient because when you don’t have to keep your hands on the pump, you’re not focused on it, therefore you are relaxed, and this helps with the flow of milk. You can return phone calls, take notes or whatever else you need to do.

Popular Hands-Free Pumping Options

There are several brands of breast pump bras, all seem to do the same thing, aid in helping to use a breast pump hands free.

The Simple Wishes Hands Free Pumping Bra offers the support of using a breast pump in both a strapped and strapless bra. This bra has a two inch zip-front that makes it easy to work with most all the brands of breast pumps. The zipper works with a Velcro back and the fabric is a very soft and comfortable cotton / Spandex blend, making it easy and simple to wear and use.
The next type is called PumpEase™ hands-free pumping supports. This support is as good looking as it is handy. Made to hold most breast pumps in place by securing the pump firmly to the breast, allowing you to be hands free. The polyester spandex blend maintains its shape for many many pumping sessions while remaining soft and breathable. This product comes in cute prints that make them fun to wear and use.
The third one is called Easy Expression Pumping Bustierand works basically like the first two by holding the breast pump in place allowing you to be hands free to do other things. This bustier has a zip-front design too which makes wearing and using it super easy. Made from a comfortable cotton / lycra blend so it’s soft as well as useful.

Both the Easy Expression and PumpEase are meant to be used with a nursing bra, the Simple Wishes is the total bra and support in one and doesn’t need an additional nursing bra.

All three of these have very good product reviews and recommendations. Nursing moms, especially those who have to pump either because of work, or because they have a preemie or multiples, find the breast pump bras a lifesaver and enables them to properly feed their babies breast milk for a lot longer than if they didn’t have this extra help.

You hear a lot about women expressing their breast milk either by massaging their breasts with their hands or with a breast pump. Why would any woman want to do this, when it is so natural to allow the baby to feed directly off the breast? There are actually quite a few reasons why most women need to express milk at some point in their breastfeeding years. The most common reasons include:

  • The baby has difficulty latching and cannot express milk independently.
  • The baby was born premature or has a medical condition, forcing them to remain in the hospital. The mother may not be able to stay at all times to breastfeed naturally, but the baby needs the breast milk.
  • The mother must return to work but wants to continue feeding the baby breast milk.
  • The mother must return to work and needs to relieve the breasts of tension and avoid leaking.
  • The mother is working part time, and needs to leave bottles of breast milk at home with another parent or babysitter. They breast feed naturally the rest of the time.
  • There are problems with the mother’s milk, and it is not expressing properly for the baby.
  • The breasts are too full and overextended for the baby to comfortably latch. Expressing a small amount of milk allows the baby to latch correctly.
  • Improper breastfeeding has led to nipple damage. A period of time without natural feeding allows the nipple to heal.
  • The mother’s milk supply is starting to slow down. Expression can help get it going full speed again.
  • Nipple blockage may put the mother at risk of mastitis. The flow of milk clears the blockage.
  • Mastitis has set in, and the mother needs to maintain her milk flow.

Most mothers do have to express milk on their own at some point during their breastfeeding years. This often occurs when the other needs to return to work, or needs to leave the home for a short period of time without the baby. There may also be circumstances or locations where natural feeding seem inappropriate or uncomfortable for the mother. Expressing into a bottle ahead of time with a bottle nipple similarly shaped to the mother’s nipple can allow expression without wasting milk or breaking the baby’s habit of natural breastfeeding.
