Clapping Noise while Breastfeeding
Visitor Question: My son is being breastfed, for the past 3 weeks he's been making a clapping noise where his tongue touches the roof of his mouth and makes a noise.
He does it every time I breastfeed him and he then gets frustrated, he has some trouble latching on and takes him a while to do it, when he latches on he eats for a minute and lets it go again, almost as the nipple slips out.
He has the same trouble with bottles. I heard that if their soft spot drops that they need to have it pushed back up so they can eat better. How can what is wrong?
Please help!!!
Breastfeeding Magazine Answer: Unfortunately, there is no way for us to tell for certain what it is without witnessing it.
However, it may be as simple as thrush. Many little ones who get thrush have this same reaction to breastfeeding and bottle feeding.
If you notice that you have any symptoms of thrush, then prompt treatment should clear up the issue.
If that is not the answer, it would probably be most helpful to have an in-person consultation with a lactation consultant who can watch you feed and give you some ideas. It could be anything from nipple confusion to a medical concern.
Good luck!
