Closeness of Breastfeeding
Monica's breastfeeding story about the closeness of breastfeeding even after going back to work and expressing breast milk.
Submitted by Monica (Rhode Island, USA)
I was fortunate to breast feed both of my children. It was a wonderful experience and I particularly enjoyed the closeness I felt to my children. When I went back to work, I expressed milk with a battery-operated breast pump and then kept it in the refrigerator to be given to my sons when I wasn't there. It was not the optimal solution but it enabled me to breast feed longer than my time at home allowed. I had a long maternity leave, which was helpful, but I wasn't ready to give up nursing when I went back to work. I did learn that I could nurse my second son longer than my first by adjusting my nursing to twice a day after 8 months. The first time I had trouble keeping my supply equal to adequately nurse my son full-time because my job didn't lend itself to expressing during work, although I did it as long as I could manage. It was possible but not optimal. With my second son, I was able to continue to provide the benefits of scaled down nursing for six more months. Therefore, I nursed for a total of fourteen months by doing just morning and evening feedings after the initial period. My milk supply adjusted well and I was so grateful for the additional special and unforgettable time with my second son.
