Constantly hungry 2 week old?

by Dee

Breastfed Baby Boy

Breastfed Baby Boy

Visitor Question: I am breastfeeding my 2 week old and as soon as he finishes nursing both breasts (nurses for anywhere from 10-20 minutes on each breast,) he immediately starts to "root" towards me and give me the signals that he wants to nurse again.

Is he not getting enough milk from the feeding? It doesn't happen with each feeding, but seems to be more prevalent during evening and late-night feedings.

Also, he is having the correct amount of poops/pees per day. I breastfed my daughter who is now 3 years old and never experienced this.

Breastfeeding Magazine Response: It is VERY common for babies to do this at 2 weeks of age. Why? He is probably experiencing a growth spurt!

Keep nursing him on demand and your supply will soon catch up to his demands!

Don't supplement with formula, though, or your body will not know to make more milk.

As long as he is having good output...he is getting enough.

Congratulations...your healthy little one is growing!
