My son was born in Feb 2003. I was breastfed as a baby, so breastfeeding was the only option I considered for my son. Minutes after he was born, I put him to my breast – he was a little sleepy, maybe even a lot sleepy. But a few hours later, when he was fully awake and I was rested, he was able to latch on and nursed perfectly.

I am really glad of the breastfeeding decision I made – my son was very healthy as a baby, and still is. Even when I had a viral infection which had me in bed for days, the little guy was fine. He just kept nursing. While I was sick I did nothing except nurse and rest.

When the little guy was 6 months old, I took him camping for 2 weeks. It would have been hard to warm bottles and mix formula, but breast milk was always ready and available.

We both had a great time! Friends and acquaintances have sometimes complained about how hard it is – to formula feed. One woman complained that after the nighttime feed, it took and hour to burp the baby (and then get her back to sleep.) With breastfeeding, the baby gets less gas and requires less burping.

Things to keep in mind – After the baby is born, you will need a few nursing bras. (I got mine while still pregnant, as my old bras were getting tight.) A “nursing shirt” or two is a good idea also.

My breastfed son is now happy, healthy, smart and very social. All thanks to human milk!
