Menstruation and Breastfeeding

Visitor Question: I breastfed my first child for 1 year. However , after 6 months I got my period and it continued regularly.

I now have a 5 month old that I breastfeed. I'm curious, does the quality of the milk change once you get your period?

Breastfeeding Magazine Reponse: Breast milk is no less nutritious once your get your period...there is absolutely no difference in quality. Breast milk is still the best food for your little one!

Some moms do notice a temporary drop in breast milk supply for a few days right before their periods each month due to hormonal fluctuations, but most moms notice no change at all.

Either way, the quality remains the same.
