Nipple Shields: Don't Be Afraid to Use Them

by Tammy
(OHIO)

Visitor Tip: A nipple shield was a God send for me with my first son. My nipples were not drawn out at all (flat in other words) and so he had a hard time latching on. After using a nipple shield for a few days it really drew my nipples out and he was able to latch much easier after that, with or without it.

A lactation consultant told me not to use it for too long because it's best to have the baby directly on the breast, but I used it for most of the time I breastfed him. He still had trouble without it a lot so I figured it was either that or struggle. I just wanted him to get my milk and I am so thankful the nurse at the hospital suggested this when she did or I may have given up all together.
