Pain Breastfeeding Until Breast is Empty

Pain Breastfeeding Until Breast is Empty

Visitor Question: I am the mother of 1 year old twins.

My "younger" twin loves her milk and I think that she is nursing until the breast is empty.

From time to time, she will nurse and after 20 minutes or so, I feel a sharp pain in a section of my breast, while she is nursing.

If I hold the area(s) where the pain is I can continue to nurse her, however when she is finally finished, those areas ache. So, I wonder whether or not she has emptied some of the milk ducts, while others still have milk. Please help.

Thanks!

Breastfeeding Magazine Response:
It may be as simple as a congested or plugged duct.

However, this may not be just a simple situation. It would probably be helpful to be seen by a lactation consultant who can observe the situation and watch your little one through an entire nursing session to figure out the source of your pain.

Breastfeeding shouldn't hurt.

Good luck!
