Problems with Breastfeeding at Work

Problems with Breastfeeding at Work

Problems with Breastfeeding at Work

After I had my son in March of 2004 I returned to work a couple months later while I was still breastfeeding.

The company I worked for was not new mom/pregnant lady friendly. There was no where that I could go to pump during the day inside the building (the bathroom was only a single room/one person bathroom with only one for our area).

It got to the point that I would take my breaks around when I would need to pump and would have to go sit outside in my car to pump the milk for my son. I left there a few months later.

My advice is when you are preparing to get pregnant or are pregnant but changing jobs and are wanting to breastfeed check the companies policy of where you work regarding pumping or areas where you can do so.

Some larger companies now have rooms or sections of the restroom that are private and set up just for that.

Pumping at Work
by: Sierra K

I was told by my lactation consultant that its illegal for your employer to make you pump in the restroom and they are suppose to have a location for pumping mothers other then the restroom. I would also look into laws on pumping at work.

Legal perks
by: Susana Marina

Besides finding out your workplace's policy on mothers, if any, I would recommend finding out if there are any legal protections for nursing mothers.
I have a two-month old baby and I'll return to work in a week, and I just found out that in my country, nursing mothers are legally entitled to one 15-minute break every two hours for pumping, and leaving work an hour early.
