Pumping your Breast

Expressing Breast Milk

Expressing Breast Milk

Visitor Question:

When pumping your breast should you completely empty the breast or stop pumping when little to no milk is coming out?

Breastfeeding Magazine Response:

Unfortunately, the answer is not the same for every breastfeeding mother. It really depends on your milk supply.

If you have trouble keeping up with your baby and can't pump as much as your baby will eat...you should try to completely empty your breasts. If you don't, it can lead to a lowered breast milk supply.

On the other hand, some of us are blessed with enough milk to feed EXTRA kids if they needed and have more than enough milk. If this is you, then you can probably stop pumping when you are getting very little out...because you are not at a risk of drying up or having a big supply drop.

Good luck pumping!
