Schedule and Amount

by Sarah Gallagher
(WA)

Visitor Question: Hi my son is 7 weeks old and I want to put him on a schedule of eating every 3 hours during the day.

He has already gained a lot of weight and my concern is that he is only eating 2-2.5 ounces at a time.

Will a schedule not work? Should he be eating more at each feeding?

Breastfeeding Magazine Response: It will be difficult to schedule him right now because most babies have a growth spurt at about 8 weeks.

After that, you can try to change your baby over to a three hour schedule and his eating habits will adjust.
