Whether breastfeeding moms have stretch marks on their breasts or their bellies, we all have one thing in common…we want them gone! Here is a guide to your stretch mark removal options.

About Stretch Marks

Stretch marks are a form of scarring on the skin, usually associated with sudden weight gain and stretching of the skin. They result when the dermis, the layer of skin directly beneath the epidermis, is torn due to rapid stretching of the skin. Stretch marks are usually associated with pregnancy or obesity, and will fade over time but not completely disappear.

Luckily, there are many stretch mark treatment options that can make the appearance of stretch marks less noticeable and even make them disappear.

Prevention

Stretch mark prevention

The first step for stretch mark treatment options is prevention. Because they are caused by sudden weight gain, maintaining a healthy weight throughout pregnancy can help prevent them from ever occurring. The dermis tears when there is no support holding the skin in place, so there are still options that can be used for prevention while pregnant.

Wearing maternity clothes that support the belly while not being too tight can help with the prevention of stretch marks, by providing a pregnant belly will support to prevent the dermis from tearing. Using good stretch mark lotions and moisturizing creams can also be beneficial, since they can provide elasticity to the skin to make it less likely to tear.

 Moisturizers

If prevention is no longer an option, the next step is finding a suitable treatment to get rid of those stretch marks. Moisturizers and creams can also be used even if stretch marks are present, since they can trigger the natural healing process in which skin can repair itself. Vitamin E and cocoa butter are two key ingredients that can allow the skin to heal itself, and can actually help by reducing the appearance of stretch marks on the skin. Creams that contain alpha hydroxy acids can also be very beneficial, since they can make the skin softer, can exfoliate the skin, and even trigger new cell growth to fill in the areas where the dermis was once torn.

Trilastin

TriLastin SR is a stretch mark removal formula made up of peptides, proteins, anti-oxidants and humectants to give fast visible changes in stretch marks. The cream reduces both the depth and length of the scar tissue by actually filling in the stretch marks.

It also contains some great skin toners that fade and correct any skin discoloration, and helps to repair the skin by working at a basic cellular level. This allows regeneration of collagen and elastin to increase your skin’s thickness and therefore help prevent future damage.

This is a favorite of many moms because they can avoid lasers and surgery while still getting effective stretch mark treatment.

Laser and Massage Therapy

Laser therapy and massage therapy are two popular methods used to reduce the appearance of stretch marks, and are both non-invasive procedures that don’t require any recovery time. Laser therapy works by sealing off the blood vessels that cause stretch marks to look red, which will reduce the appearance and make them appear clear over time. The laser can also be used to stimulate collagen growth, which will work to fill in the gaps created when the dermis tore and created the scar. Massage therapy is performed by using a motorized roller to gently massage affected areas, which can help to get rid of toxins, increase blood flow, and even stimulate collagen to fill in the dermis. This method is also used to reduce the appearance of cellulite, but must be done in several sessions before any results are noticeable.

Tummy Tuck

One permanent method for getting rid of stretch marks is surgery, which must be performed by a licensed plastic surgeon at a hospital or surgery center. A tummy tuck is the most common procedure performed for stretch mark treatment, and is a very invasive procedure that requires a great deal of recovery time. It removes the loose skin at the bottom of the stomach, and the remaining skin is then stretched over the stomach to result in a tight, stretch mark free stomach. It can get rid of any stretch marks below the waist line, but those near the navel and above will still be noticeable unless treated a different way.

Thank Goodness!

Although stretch marks can be embarrassing and hard to deal with, aren’t we so glad we have our choice of treatment options currently available!?
